Purpose

Mission Statement

Inspire future generations of scholars, thinkers and leaders to approach problems, information and ideas utilizing critical thinking skills, rooted in the political legacy and words of statesmen/philosophers of the past; Create a fellowship and community where like-minded scholars, academics and learners at all levels of achievement might share knowledge, engage in dialogue and learn from each other; Defend the legacy of John C. Calhoun by examining his work, sharing with others and placing him in context as one of America’s greatest statesmen/political philosophers.

Vision

The Calhoun Institute will build a community of bright and inquisitive minds, at all levels of academic achievement, and thereby nurture and grow a new generation of scholars, thinkers and leaders rooted in right historical, legal, Constitutional and moral thinking while defending those legacies gifted to us from our past.

We are a non-profit educational institution dedicated to the study of constitutional law, federalism, states’ rights, culture and good governance.

The Calhoun Institute exists to link the political legacy and thoughts of John C. Calhoun to contemporary problems, issues and discussions of political theory, specifically as these relate to the southern tradition and contemporary problems/solutions.

Toward that end we encourage, support and highlight scholarly works that address issues of constitutional law, federalism, states’ rights, culture and good governance.
